Affect and effect

Affect is usually a verb.

1. To influence someone or something, or cause them to change.

  • It’s a disease which affects many younger people.
  • The noise affects my performance.
  • The problem affects everyone.

2. To cause a strong emotion, especially sadness (often passive).

  • The house was affected by the fire.
  • He was deeply affected by the film.
  • The people are affected by flood.

Effect is usually a noun.
A change, reaction, or result that is caused by something.

  • The promotion had a huge effect on his life.
  • Effects of the flood are destructive.

Effect as a verb:
To make something happen.

  • The quit India movement effected a huge change.
